Rent a Car Podgorica Without a Credit Card
Phoenix Car Montenegro accepts almost our entire fleet without a credit card. Pay with a debit card or cash when you collect the vehicle. How Booking Without a Card Works
Many visitors arrive in Montenegro with only a debit card, or with a credit card that has a low limit unsuitable for a rental deposit hold. We built our booking flow around this reality. When you reserve a car on our site, we ask for a small advance payment to confirm the dates and the vehicle. This is not a deposit hold on a credit line - it is a straightforward payment toward your final rental cost.
The remaining balance and the security deposit are settled when you collect the car, in Podgorica, at the airport, or at a hotel anywhere along the coast. You can pay this balance with a debit card or in cash. There is no requirement to show a credit card at any stage of the process, for the majority of our fleet.
This approach works the same whether you are renting for a city stay in Podgorica, a beach holiday in Budva, or a longer loop through Kotor and Tivat. The pickup location does not change the payment method - only the vehicle class you choose can.

Car Classes Available Without a Credit Card
Nearly every category in our fleet can be booked this way. A handful of high-end vehicles still require a card due to their higher deposit value, but the practical options for most travellers are open to debit and cash payment.
- Economy - Fiat Panda, Renault Twingo. The most common debit-card booking, from 25 EUR per day. Lower deposit amount, ideal for young drivers and short city stays.
- Compact - VW Polo, Opel Corsa. Comfortable for coastal drives, still bookable without a card. A popular choice for couples travelling between Podgorica and the sea.
- Sedan - Skoda Octavia, VW Passat. Available on debit or cash, though the deposit amount is somewhat higher than economy models.
- SUV / Crossover - Dacia Duster, Nissan Qashqai. Bookable without a credit card in most cases, subject to availability at the time of your dates.
- Premium and 7-seater vehicles - availability without a credit card is limited and depends on the specific car. Ask us directly if you need one of these classes without a card.
Documents You Actually Need
Instead of a credit card, we ask for two documents that every driver already carries: a valid passport (or national ID for EU citizens) and an original driving licence held for at least one year. Photocopies are not accepted. If your licence is not in Latin script, bring an International Driving Permit or a certified translation.
At pickup, our driver checks these documents, completes a short vehicle inspection form with you, and collects the balance and deposit in cash or by debit card. No credit card is asked for, no card imprint is taken, and no card number is stored on file for these bookings.
Why Montenegro Differs From Western Europe
Large international rental brands in Western Europe generally require a credit card because their systems are built around automated deposit holds - a temporary freeze on your card that releases weeks later. As a direct local provider, we handle deposits manually and in person. This means we can accept a debit card or cash instead of relying on a credit-card processing system.
It also means the deposit is something you can see and count, whether it is cash handed back to you at return, or a debit charge reversed on the spot once we confirm the car is undamaged. There is no waiting for a bank to release a hold days after your holiday ends.
Who This Option Suits
This booking method is particularly useful for younger travellers who have not yet been issued a credit card, for visitors from countries where debit cards are the norm, and for anyone who prefers not to tie up a credit limit while travelling. It also suits families and groups where one person handles cash for the whole trip, splitting fuel, tolls, and the rental deposit from a shared travel budget.
If you are also trying to reduce upfront costs, our no-deposit rental option can sometimes be combined with debit or cash payment, lowering the amount you need to set aside before the trip. Ask us at booking which combination fits your situation.
An Honest Note on Insurance
Skipping the credit card requirement does not change your insurance responsibility. Every rental includes Collision Damage Waiver and theft protection, but there is still an excess amount you are liable for in case of damage - typically 200 to 500 EUR depending on the vehicle class. Paying by debit or cash does not remove this excess; it simply changes how the deposit is collected and returned.
If you want to reduce your liability to nearly zero, full coverage insurance is available for a daily fee, and it can be added regardless of whether you pay by debit card or cash. We explain the exact excess amount for your chosen vehicle before you confirm the booking, so there are no surprises at pickup.
FAQ - Renting Without a Credit Card
Can I really rent a car in Montenegro without any credit card?
Yes, for most of our fleet. You pay a small advance online to confirm the booking, then settle the remaining balance and deposit with a debit card or cash when you collect the vehicle. A handful of premium vehicles still require a credit card due to their higher deposit value.
What deposit amount should I expect on a debit card or in cash?
The deposit depends on the vehicle class, typically 200 to 500 EUR. Cash deposits are refunded immediately upon return once the car is checked. Debit card deposits are reversed shortly after the inspection, usually the same day or within a few banking days.
Do I need an International Driving Permit if I have no credit card?
The credit card and the driving permit are separate matters. An IDP is only needed if your licence is not in Latin script. If your licence is in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish, no permit is required, regardless of your payment method.
Is the insurance different if I pay without a credit card?
No. Collision Damage Waiver and theft protection are included in every rental, whether you pay by debit card, cash, or credit card. The excess amount you are liable for stays the same across payment methods. Full coverage insurance can also be added regardless of how you pay.
Can I combine no-credit-card payment with a no-deposit rental?
In some cases, yes. Certain vehicles allow a reduced or waived deposit alongside debit or cash payment. Check our no-deposit page or ask us directly at booking, since availability depends on the car class and rental dates.
Does this apply to airport pickup as well as city delivery?
Yes. Whether you collect the car at Podgorica Airport, at a hotel in Budva, or at our office, the same debit-card or cash process applies. Location does not affect the payment method, only the vehicle you select does.
