Why Rent a Car in Podgorica?

Podgorica is Montenegro's capital and the country's main transport hub. While the city itself is compact and walkable, a rental car unlocks the entire country. Within an hour you can reach Skadar Lake National Park, the Morača Canyon, or the medieval monasteries carved into mountain cliffs. Two hours north brings you to Durmitor National Park and the Tara River Canyon—Europe's deepest gorge. Head south and you're on the Adriatic coast at Budva or Bar.

Podgorica Airport (TGD) is 12 kilometres south of the city centre. Most international visitors land here, collect a rental car, and drive straight to the coast or mountains without entering the capital. If you're staying in Podgorica, we deliver cars directly to your accommodation. No shuttle buses, no queues at a rental counter. You meet our driver at your hotel lobby or apartment entrance, sign the paperwork, and drive away.

Public transport between Podgorica and coastal towns exists but runs infrequently. Buses to Budva take 90 minutes and cost around 7 EUR one-way. A rental car gives you the freedom to stop at viewpoints, visit mountain villages, and explore at your own pace. The drive from Podgorica to Budva via the Sozina tunnel takes 50 minutes. Without a car, you're limited to organized tours or expensive taxis.

Pickup and Delivery in Podgorica

We operate from our main office in Podgorica but deliver cars throughout the city at no extra charge. This includes hotels, apartments, business addresses, and the main bus and train stations. For Podgorica Airport pickup, we offer meet-and-greet service at the arrivals terminal. Our driver waits with a name sign, hands over the keys, and walks you to the car parked outside.

Most clients choose hotel delivery. You land at the airport, take a taxi or airport shuttle to your Podgorica accommodation (around 15 EUR), settle in, and we bring the car to your hotel lobby at a pre-arranged time. This avoids the stress of navigating an unfamiliar city immediately after a flight. You start your rental refreshed and oriented.

If you prefer airport pickup, the process is simple. After collecting your luggage, exit through arrivals and look for our driver holding a sign with your name. The airport terminal is small—you won't miss each other. The driver will check your documents (passport, driving licence, voucher), complete a quick vehicle inspection form, and hand over the keys. The car is parked 50 metres away in the short-term lot. Drive time from airport to Podgorica city centre is 15 minutes via Tološka šuma road.

Return procedure is equally straightforward. If you collected the car at the airport, return it to the same short-term parking area and call our driver. If the car was delivered to your hotel, we collect it from the same location. You hand over the keys, we check the fuel level and vehicle condition, and you're done. No need to find a petrol station at 5 AM before an early flight.

Top Drives from Podgorica

Podgorica sits at the crossroads of Montenegro's main transport routes. Every corner of the country is within a half-day drive. These are the most popular routes from the capital:

Podgorica to Budva (65 km, 50 minutes)

The quickest route to the coast uses the Sozina tunnel—a 4.2-kilometre bore through the coastal mountain range. The toll is €2.50 for cars, paid in cash at the tunnel entrance. The old road over Paštrovska Gora is free but adds 30 minutes and involves steep hairpin bends. Most drivers pay the toll. Once through the tunnel, you descend into Budva within 15 minutes. The route continues south to Bar, Sutomore, and Petrovac.

Podgorica to Kotor (90 km, 80 minutes)

Drive west on the E80 motorway toward the coast, then turn north at Budva onto the coastal road. The final 30 kilometres hug the Bay of Kotor shoreline—one of Europe's most scenic drives. The road is narrow and winding. Expect heavy traffic in summer, especially around Kotor old town and the Verige ferry crossing. Continue north to Herceg Novi at the bay entrance or cross into Croatia at Debeli Brijeg (7 km from Herceg Novi).

Podgorica to Skadar Lake (20 km, 25 minutes)

Head southeast on the Podgorica–Shkodër road. The main viewpoint at Pavlova Strana is 20 kilometres from the city centre. This is the easiest national park to visit from Podgorica—ideal for a half-day trip. The lake is shared with Albania; the southern shore is only accessible from the Albanian side. Boat tours and kayak rentals operate from Virpazar village (40 km southeast of Podgorica).

Podgorica to Ostrog Monastery (45 km, 50 minutes)

Drive north on the E762 toward Nikšić. After 35 kilometres, turn right toward Ostrog. The monastery is built into a vertical cliff face 900 metres above the Zeta valley. The final 8 kilometres are on a narrow mountain road with sharp switchbacks. Park at the lower monastery and walk 20 minutes uphill to the upper monastery, or drive the final section if confident on mountain roads. This is Montenegro's most visited pilgrimage site—arrive before 10 AM to avoid tour buses.

Podgorica to Durmitor National Park (140 km, 2.5 hours)

Take the E762 north through Nikšić, then continue on the E80 to Šavnik and Žabljak. The road climbs from 40 metres elevation in Podgorica to 1,450 metres at Žabljak. You cross the Morača Canyon—one of Europe's deepest river gorges—via a series of tunnels and bridges. The Morača-Mateševo toll section costs €3.50 for cars. Žabljak is the base for hiking, rafting the Tara River, and visiting the Black Lake. In winter this route requires snow chains or winter tyres (included in all our rentals from November to March).

Podgorica to Tivat Airport (85 km, 75 minutes)

Use the same route as Budva (via Sozina tunnel), then continue west along the coast to Tivat. Tivat Airport serves the Bay of Kotor region and is Montenegro's second-busiest airport. Many clients fly into Tivat, rent a car, and drive to Podgorica or vice versa. If you're picking up passengers at Tivat, allow extra time in summer—coastal traffic can be heavy between June and September.

Rules, Documents & Insurance

Driver Requirements

Minimum age is 21 years. You must have held a valid driving licence for at least one year. Drivers under 23 may face restrictions on premium or high-performance vehicles. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended for non-EU licences but not legally required. We accept licences in Latin script (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish). Licences in Cyrillic or non-Latin scripts should be accompanied by an IDP or certified translation.

Required Documents at Pickup

Deposit and Payment

We accept credit cards, debit cards, and cash. The deposit amount varies by vehicle class—typically €200–500. If paying by card, we pre-authorize the deposit amount. It's released within 7–10 days after the car is returned in good condition. Cash deposits are refunded immediately upon return. The rental fee can be paid in advance online or at pickup. Fuel is paid separately—we operate a full-to-full policy.

Insurance Coverage

Every rental includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP). CDW reduces your liability for vehicle damage to the excess amount (typically €500–800 depending on car class). TP covers theft or total loss with a similar excess. Tyre, glass, and underbody damage are usually excluded from basic CDW. Full coverage insurance (zero excess) is available for an additional daily fee—this eliminates your financial liability entirely.

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory by Montenegrin law and included in all rentals. This covers damage to other vehicles or property in an accident where you are at fault. The minimum coverage is €1,000,000.

Cross-Border Travel

You may drive into Albania with advance notice and a €20 cross-border fee. The fee covers additional insurance required by Albanian law. Notify us at booking if you plan to visit Albania. Travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, or Serbia requires written approval and may involve additional insurance costs. Croatia is accessible without restrictions—the border at Debeli Brijeg (near Herceg Novi) is 95 kilometres from Podgorica.

Fuel Policy

All cars are provided with a full tank. Return the car with a full tank to avoid refuelling charges. Petrol stations are common in Podgorica and along major highways. In mountain areas, stations can be 30–40 kilometres apart—fill up before heading into Durmitor or Prokletije. Most stations accept cards, but carry cash for rural locations. Fuel prices are regulated and similar nationwide: around €1.45 per litre for petrol, €1.35 for diesel.

Driving in Podgorica

Podgorica is a low-rise city with wide boulevards and relatively light traffic compared to coastal towns. The city centre is laid out on a grid, making navigation straightforward. Parking is metered in the central zone (marked with blue lines) from 08:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday. Rates are €0.50–1.00 per hour depending on location. Pay at parking meters or via SMS. Free parking is available in residential areas outside the paid zone.

The main shopping and business district is along Bulevar Svetog Petra Cetinjskog and Bulevar Ivana Crnojevića. Most hotels have private parking or can direct you to nearby public lots. Street parking is tight around the old Stara Varoš quarter and the Millennium Bridge. If visiting the city centre, use one of the multi-storey car parks near Delta City shopping mall or the City Quarter complex.

Podgorica has two ring roads that bypass the centre. The outer ring (Podgorička obilaznica) connects the airport to the northern suburbs and the E80 motorway to Kolašin. The inner ring follows the Morača River and links the main residential areas. Use these to avoid central traffic during morning (07:30–09:00) and evening (16:00–18:00) rush hours.

Road Conditions and Signage

Main roads in and around Podgorica are in good condition. The E80 motorway to Kolašin and the E762 to Nikšić are two-lane highways with regular maintenance. Secondary roads to mountain villages may be narrow and lack centre markings. Signage is bilingual (Montenegrin and English) on major routes. GPS navigation is reliable, but download offline maps—mobile signal drops in mountain areas.

Common Hazards

Watch for pedestrians crossing mid-block, especially near bus stops and markets. Podgorica drivers are generally courteous but may not always signal lane changes. Roundabouts are common—yield to traffic already in the circle. Speed cameras operate on the E80 motorway and the airport road. The fine for exceeding the limit by 20 km/h is €60, payable on the spot or at a bank within 15 days.

FAQ — Renting a Car in Podgorica

Can I rent a car in Podgorica and return it at the coast?

Yes. We offer one-way rentals between Podgorica and coastal cities like Budva, Kotor, Tivat, or Herceg Novi. A one-way fee applies (typically €30–50 depending on distance). Inform us at booking so we can arrange vehicle logistics. Airport returns at Tivat or Podgorica are also possible.

Do I need winter tyres for mountain trips from Podgorica?

Winter tyres are mandatory in Montenegro from 15 November to 31 March. All our vehicles are fitted with winter tyres during this period at no extra charge. If you're travelling to Durmitor, Bjelasica, or Prokletije outside the mandatory season (April–October), check current conditions. Snow can fall at high elevations even in May or September. We can fit winter tyres on request.

Is it safe to drive from Podgorica to Kotor at night?

The route is safe but requires concentration. The coastal section from Budva to Kotor is narrow and winding with limited lighting. Avoid driving this stretch in heavy rain or fog. If arriving on a late flight, consider staying overnight in Podgorica or Budva and driving to Kotor the next morning. The route via the Sozina tunnel to Budva is well-lit and straightforward at any hour.

Can I collect the car at Podgorica Airport and return it at Tivat Airport?

Yes. This is a popular option for travellers flying into one airport and departing from the other. The one-way fee for Podgorica–Tivat is around €40. We arrange meet-and-greet service at both airports. Specify your flight details at booking so our drivers can coordinate pickup and return times.

What happens if the car breaks down outside Podgorica?

Call our 24-hour assistance line immediately. We provide roadside support throughout Montenegro. If the issue is minor (flat tyre, dead battery), we send a technician to your location. If the car cannot be repaired on-site, we arrange a tow and deliver a replacement vehicle. Mechanical failures are covered at no cost to you. Damage caused by off-road driving or negligence is not covered.

Are there tolls between Podgorica and the coast?

Yes. The Sozina tunnel costs €2.50 for cars (one-way). If you drive north toward Kolašin or Žabljak, the Morača-Mateševo section costs €3.50. Both tolls are paid in cash at the entry point. Keep small notes handy—toll booths may not have change for large bills. No other tolls exist on routes from Podgorica to coastal or mountain destinations.

Can I rent a car for just one day in Podgorica?

Yes. We accept one-day rentals, though weekly rates offer better value. A one-day rental from Podgorica allows a day trip to Skadar Lake, Ostrog Monastery, or the coast and back. Minimum rental is 24 hours. If you collect the car at 10:00, return it by 10:00 the next day to avoid additional charges.
