Sutomore sits at the centre of Montenegro's southern coast, making it an excellent base for day trips. The Adriatic Highway runs through town, and the Sozina tunnel shortens the route to Budva and Tivat by 20 minutes compared to the old coastal road.

Sutomore → Ulcinj Old Town (35 km, 40 min)

Drive south on the E80 through Valdanos olive groves and the small beach villages of Veliki Pijesak and Donji Štoj. Ulcinj's walled old town sits on a rocky promontory above the harbour. Park near the lower gate and walk up cobbled lanes to cafés with views over the Adriatic. The drive continues another 10 km to Velika Plaža, a 13 km sandy beach popular with kitesurfers.

Sutomore → Skadar Lake via Virpazar (30 km, 35 min)

Head north to Bar, then turn inland on the road to Virpazar. The village sits on the shore of Skadar Lake National Park, the largest lake in the Balkans. Boat tours depart from the waterfront (€10–15 per person for a one-hour loop). The lake is a birdwatching hotspot — over 270 species recorded, including Dalmatian pelicans and pygmy cormorants. Restaurants in Virpazar serve carp and eel caught fresh from the lake.

Sutomore → Petrovac (17 km, 20 min)

Drive north on the E80 past Bar and the turnoff to Stari Bar. Petrovac is a smaller beach resort with a horseshoe bay, a Venetian fortress on a headland, and two offshore islets. The town has a quieter atmosphere than Budva, with family-run guesthouses and konobas (traditional taverns). Park near the waterfront promenade; the beach is a five-minute walk.

Sutomore → Budva Old Town (40 km, 45 min via Sozina)

Take the E80 north to the Sozina tunnel entrance (toll €2.50 for cars). The tunnel cuts under the coastal mountains, emerging near Budva. Follow signs to Stari Grad (Old Town), a walled medieval quarter on a small peninsula. Parking is available outside the walls (€1.50/hour in summer). Walk the ramparts for views over the marina and Sveti Nikola island.

Sutomore → Kotor Bay (60 km, 70 min via Sozina)

Use the Sozina tunnel to reach Budva, then continue north along the coast to Kotor. The final 20 km wind around the Bay of Kotor, passing Perast and its two offshore churches. Kotor Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Venetian palaces, Orthodox churches, and a fortress trail climbing 1,350 steps to St. John's Castle. Park outside the walls (€1–2/hour) and explore on foot.

Sutomore → Stari Bar (12 km, 15 min)

Turn off the E80 at Bar and follow signs uphill to Stari Bar (Old Bar), a ruined medieval town abandoned after an 1878 earthquake. Walk through stone gates and crumbling churches overgrown with fig trees and wild olive. Entry costs €3 per person. A small museum displays Ottoman-era artefacts. The site offers views over modern Bar and the Adriatic.

Rules, Documents & Insurance

To rent a car in Sutomore with Phoenix Car Montenegro, you must be at least 21 years old and have held a valid driving licence for a minimum of one year. Drivers under 23 may face a young-driver surcharge depending on the car category. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended for non-EU licence holders, though not legally required if your licence uses Latin script.

At pickup, present your passport, driving licence, and the booking voucher (email confirmation). Payment is in euros. We accept credit cards (Visa, MasterCard) and cash. A deposit is held on your card or collected in cash — the amount varies by car class, typically €200–500. The deposit is refunded when you return the car undamaged with a full tank.

All rentals include CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and TP (Theft Protection) with an excess of €500–800 depending on the vehicle. Full coverage (zero excess) is available for an additional daily fee. Third-party liability insurance is mandatory in Montenegro and included in every rental. Roadside assistance is available 24 hours via a single phone number provided at pickup.

Fuel policy is full-to-full: the car is delivered with a full tank, and you return it full. Petrol stations are common along the E80; the nearest to Sutomore is in Bar. Diesel costs slightly less than petrol. Unleaded 95 octane is standard.

Driving in Montenegro is on the right. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. Children under 12 must sit in the back seat; child seats are available on request (free of charge, subject to availability). Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited unless hands-free. Headlights must be on at all times, day and night. The blood alcohol limit is 0.03%, effectively zero tolerance.

Parking & Driving in Sutomore

Sutomore is a small town with limited street parking along the main promenade and side streets. In summer (July–August), parking is paid: €1–2 per hour from 08:00–20:00. Buy a ticket from the machine and display it on your dashboard. Off-season parking is free. Most hotels and apartment complexes offer private parking for guests at no extra charge; confirm this when booking your accommodation.

The E80 Adriatic Highway runs through the centre of Sutomore. Traffic is light outside peak summer weekends. The road is two lanes in each direction with a 50 km/h limit through town. Speed cameras are active. Pedestrian crossings are marked with zebra stripes; you must stop if someone is waiting to cross.

Driving south to Ulcinj, the road hugs the coast with occasional hairpin bends and narrow sections through villages. Allow extra time if you're towing a trailer or driving a larger vehicle. Driving north to Bar and beyond, the E80 is wider and faster, though summer traffic can slow near beach access points.

The Sozina tunnel (€2.50 toll for cars) is the fastest route to Budva and Tivat. The tunnel is 4.2 km long, well-lit, and has a 60 km/h speed limit. Emergency lanes and fire extinguishers are located every 125 metres. The old coastal road via Petrovac is toll-free but takes 20 minutes longer and has steep gradients.
